Due to the current IL budget impasse, the ALRC must significantly reduce staff and curtail our professional development (PD) offerings starting November 2, 2015. The PD service plan below is for two months—November 2-December 31, 2015. At the end of December we will reevaluate our resources and staffing for future PD offerings. The ALRC will continue the following services during this time:

  • Online course registration, assignment review, and certificates. Assignment review may take longer than two weeks.
  • Response to questions and requests for technical assistance through phone and email. Requests requiring extensive research or study on our part will not be able to be fulfilled at this time.
  • Facilitation of scheduled provider/support group meetings and webinars.
  • IL Adult Learning Hotline response. When operators are not available during work hours, a phone message will explain that calls will be returned within 48 hours.

If you have any questions or comments, please let us know. Thank you for your continuing support.

The Adult Learning Resource Center (ALRC) has provided expert professional development for adult and family educators since the 1970s. The ALRC utilizes content expertise and current research to deliver high quality services to individuals, programs, and state networks. Professional development and technical assistance are provided to educators through workshops, online courses, and other activities. See the ALRC Professional Development Catalogs for details.

ALRC’s services are practitioner-based and user-friendly, responding to the current and changing needs of the field of adult education. All of the ALRC’s professional development activities are based on addressing instruction for the state’s content standards for ABE/ASE Language Arts, ABE/ASE Mathematics, and ESL.
Services include:
• single and multi-day training workshops
• intensive institutes
• online training courses
• individualized technical assistance
• special interest networking ("provider") groups
• publications and materials dissemination
• library collections
• an annual fall conference

Credential Requirements for Adult Educators in Illinois

To teach adult education classes funded by the Illinois Community College Board, there are three minimum state requirements:
• Hold a Bachelor’s degree
• Complete the free New Teacher Orientation (NTO) online course within six months of hire (see ALRC Online Professional Development Catalog for details)
• Complete 8 hours of professional development each fiscal year (July 1 – June 30)

Each organization may have additional requirements. Commonly, a master's degree in Adult Education, Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or another related field is preferred, along with teaching experience.

Other Sources of Professional Development

The Adult Learning Resource Center’s workshops and online courses are just one of many sources for professional development for adult educators.
