Family Engagment

The Adult Learning Resource Center (ALRC) provides training, consultation, and technical assistance to schools and school districts that are working to increase the involvement of language minority parents in their school communities and to develop strong family-school-community partnerships.

Many schools and districts throughout Illinois and the United States have successfully implemented the award-winning Parents as Educational Partners (PEP) program and related curriculum. The PEP program is compatible with the Illinois State Board of Education's Family Engagement Framework and has a track record of engaging immigrant and refugee parents in their children's education.

Why PEP?
Research consistently supports the essential role that families play in children's healthy development and academic success. However, few parent programs are designed to meet the unique needs of immigrant and refugee families. The PEP program and curriculum address the language and cultural barriers that make this population particularly vulnerable to being left out of their children's educational experiences.
